Religious Education

As a Catholic School, we follow the guidance set out by the Bishops' Conference in 2012.  To meet these requirements, we use the CTS scheme, 'The Way the Truth and the Life', which is supplemented by teachers' own planning.  We are in the process of moving on to the new Religious Education Directory.  The whole school will be following this curriculum by 2025.

Whole School Syllabus Overview

In EYFS, R.E. is taught to Nursery and Reception following the Foundation Stage Syllabus.  In Key Stage One and Two, there is a two year cycle between the Year 1 and Year 2 syllabus for Class Two, Year 3 and Year 4 syllabus for Class Three, and the Year 5 and Year 6 syllabus for Class Four.

Each term, we have an RE theme day, where the children are taught in mixed aged house groups, and focus on an aspect of the church.

If you require any further information about the curriculum in a particular year group, please make an appointment to see your child's class teacher.

Gospel Values

Our Gospel Values are embedded in all that we do here at Our Lady of the Rosary School.  We focus on a different Gospel Value every 2 weeks, and the children are rewarded for embracing one of the following Gospel Values, allowing the value to shine through their daily lives:

Love, Peace, Freedom, Truth, Hope, Justice, Courage, Goodness, Faith and Forgiveness.

Foundation Subjects

We teach a broad and balanced curriculum, where children can use and apply their skills and knowledge to succeed. Our ambitious curriculum has been designed to enable our children to build on their own, unique interests and therefore meet the specific needs of the children who come to Our Lady of the Rosary School.

Long Term Plans

Teachers create a yearly plan to ensure coverage and progression.  As our children are taught in mixed aged classes, these are on a two year cycle.

 Reading and Phonics

This September, we will be introducing a new phonics scheme called ‘Little Wandle’ which we will use to teach early reading and writing skills across the school. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. Alongside this scheme,  we have purchased sets of ‘Collins Big Cat’ reading books from Little Wandle which exactly match the level of learning in phonics that your child is working at in school.

If you would like more information about Little Wandle, please visit the link below. The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.

We promote a strong home/ school partnership and encourage children across all year groups to read regularly and discuss books with an adult at home.
